Gathering stitches is same on most makes and models, you just set up for a straight stitch but turn stitch length up to 4 and loosen off the top tension by one number, ie turn it down a little. When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance. Just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst. If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.
It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically. Up and Down Needle button won't work or reverse button Up/down button pushed does nothing. Reverse button pushed/needle goes up and down in same place. When the fabric does not move then the feed dogs under the needle plate need to be checked to see if there up or down. For a timing problem,, the feeddogs may need to be checked to see why they are not moving the fabric thru the machine. If the dealer has fully serviced the machine and will give you some sort of warranty, I don't think that you can go wrong with any of the Janome machines as a begineer.

A common symptom is that the needle will not pick up the bobbin thread. Missed stitches aren't necessarily timing related--be sure to install brand needles often and use the correct needle for the fabric & thread you are using. Using the wrong needle will often cause skipped stitches. I can offer you an alternative to backstitching, though...
