Meghan And Harry's New Canadian Home Is Massive

In one episode, Meghan Markle’s friend Serena Williams is interviewed, in another episode focused on their wedding, we see photos of the guests who attended, including Idris Elba, the Beckhams, and Oprah Winfrey. But perhaps the one celebrity friend of the couple that makes the biggest splash in the documentary is Perry, who is depicted here as a guardian angel of sorts, appearing to them at a time of desperation when they needed to find safety and security in America. On Saturday, the Daily Mail published an article claiming that the mansion featured in the slickly produced docuseries is not actually the couple’s home. The news came after Redditors zeroed in on the home and found that it’s actually a bigger, more expensive property in Montecito, California, the celebrity enclave where Harry and Meghan moved in 2020.

George Clooney and wife Amal also have a place there — while David and Victoria Beckham own a lavish mansion in Hollywood. That is the reaction among royals and courtiers at Harry and Meghan’s decision. The Sussexes will set up a new home close to Hollywood, where we are told they are currently living in lockdown with their ten-month-old baby Archie. Harry and Meghan recalled that Oprah Winfrey couldn't believe their living situation when she came over to visit them for tea. She has no royal duties on her schedule, and she’s even flown her dogs to Canada. Built of gray boulders and ringed by evergreens, a crystal blue bay, and new, six-foot security fencing, the mansion had been a perfect stronghold for plotting an abdication — as Meghan and Prince Harry did over a six-week Christmas vacation there with baby Archie. There’s a battle-ready stone turret, of course, in the $14 million Vancouver mansion where the Duchess this week will wait out the tense Megxit negotiations across the pond. Anyone can call anything a documentary as long as it’s not obviously scripted. But that actually may have added to the area’s appeal for the former royals. Just 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, it’s not as accessible to paparazzi and other celeb watchers intent on infringing on their privacy. Their friends Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres also live in grand Montecito estates nearby for that very reason. The couple announced the next day that they would be stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family.

There’s even a two-bedroom guest cottage for Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, when she comes to visit. Other amenities include a children’s cottage, pool, tennis court, teahouse, olive grove, and rose gardens. Nearly 80 percent say the couple should get no support from either the royals — Charles reportedly funds 95 percent of the couple’s expenses — or taxpayers, who pay the remaining 5 percent. Called “Mille Fleurs,” the estate is now the perfect fallout shelter for Meghan as Prince Harry meets Monday in Britain with his roiled royal family. Whereas most people will be spending the holidays sleeping in their childhood twin beds and hoping their parents won’t blast cleaning music at 8 a.m. The royal reps previously announced that the two parents, Archie Harrison, and Doria Ragland wouldn’t go to the queen’s Sandringham estate for the annual Christmas walk, opting to retreat from the spotlight and head to Canada.

The Queen has been desperate to ensure Harry and Meghan remain on side with the family, especially after sources close to the couple suggested they could give a bombshell US TV interview suggesting the royal institution is racist. Despite the couple’s friendship with Mr Trudeau, Canada has refused to contribute to their security costs after they officially leave the Royal Family on March 31. Within hours, the Sussexes released a statement confirming the story, but making it clear they wanted to continue conducting some royal duties.

Despite Mr Freda’s comments, a separate anti-monarchy campaign group in another corner of the Commonwealth claimed the Netflix docuseries will do little to aid their republican campaign. However, it was the Duke who revealed that the couple hatched alternative plans to relocate to New Zealand and South Africa. The Duchess of Sussex previously lived in Toronto when she starred as Rachel Zayne in the American legal drama Suits. In comparison, a YouGov survey from around the same time indicated that just one-in-five Britons believe the Royal Family is racist.

There is also a row about whether UK taxpayers should continue to foot the bill for the couple’s security, expected to cost up to £20million annually. We told of the couple’s plans to relinquish their HRH titles and relocate their office to Canada. They realised Canada would not work out for various reasons and they want to be based in the Los Angeles area. "It was just a chapter of our lives where I don't think anyone could believe what it was actually like behind the scenes," Meghan said of their time in the cottage. In the "Harry & Meghan" Netflix docuseries, Meghan described the cottage as "so small."

The story of Sarah, the Duchess of York, serves as a cautionary tale, said Patrick Jephson, Princess Diana’s former chief of staff. “I’ve put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can’t do that any more; we’re separate entities,” he told a friend. It was then, Markle says, that she finally took Perry up on his offer to help them.
